PRESTIGIOUS, MUHAMMAD RIZKI JOINS STUDY OF UNITED STATE INSTITUTE (SUSI) IN 2024

FSH-UIN — The Faculty of Sharia and Law of Raden Fatah State Islamic University Palembang is proud. Muhammad Rizki, a student of the Islamic Family Law Study Program, was selected to participate in the ‘Study of United State Institute (SUSI) for Global Student Leaders on Religious Diversity and Democracy Program held at Temple University, Philadelphia, United States, from 21 June to 24 July 2024.

Rizki became an envoy representing the State of Indonesia after going through a series of rigorous selection processes. SUSI is a programme organised by the United States Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs that aims to increase global students’ understanding of the United States, including about institutions, culture, society and the various diversities that develop in the United States.

The SUSI for Student Leaders programme is an intensive short-term academic programme that aims to give a group of undergraduate students a deeper understanding of the United States while enhancing their leadership skills.

135 students from 17 different countries attended the 2024 SUSI programme. Eight students from Indonesia participated in the 2024 SUSI programme, which was divided into two themes: ‘Religious Diversity and Democracy’ and ‘Climate Change and the Environment.’ Each theme was attended by four students from various universities in Indonesia.

Prof. Dr Nyayu Khodijah, S.Ag., M.Si, Rector of UIN Raden Fatah Palembang, expressed her pride in the achievements made by UIN Raden Fatah student Muhammad Rizqi. According to the Rector, Rizqi not only represents Raden Fatah State Islamic University but also Indonesia in the global arena. ‘Rizqi’s selection in the SUSI Programme is not just representing UIN Raden Fatah Palembang, but Rizqi also represents Indonesia and to show Indonesia in front of other countries and to the people of the United States,’ he said. The Rector also hopes that in the future, many students of UIN Raden Fatah will follow in Rizqi’s footsteps.

Meanwhile, Rizqi said that the programme consists of a four-week academic residency, which starts on 21 June—24 July 2024, with a series of activities, such as discussions, seminars, readings, group presentations, and balanced lectures. ‘At Temple University in Philadelphia, participants will explore various minority and majority religions in the United States through lectures, activities, and visits to houses of worship to speak with community members and religious leaders,’ Rizqi said.

Furthermore, Rizqi said that participants will also be involved in networks that promote interfaith dialogue and empower underserved religious groups. During the SUSI Programme, Rizki visited Temple University, Philadelphia, Arizona State University and other relevant institutions in the United States.

The Dean of the Faculty of Sharia and Law, Dr Muhamad Harun, M. Ag, is proud and hopes that Rizki’s achievements will motivate and be followed by other students.
